  • May. 1st, 2009 at 12:56 PM
The 2009 edition of Roland Garros kicks off on May 24th, and it is surely going to be a fascinating event to watch. The heated battles in both men's and women's singles competitions are definitely worth watching.

Roland Garros is one of the 4 grand slams tennis tournaments that are held each year and it is the single most important tennis tournament played on clay. The first edition was held in 1891, so it has great history and tradition backing it.

In men's singles' competition, the big favorite is Rafael Nadal. It is hard to point a particular point in time when a player has been the clear favorite as Nadal is now. He has amazingly never lost at Roland Garros and he is the winner of the last 4 consecutive years. Also, he is coming with his confidence boosted, as he won the Monte Carlo and the Barcelona tournaments this year, both for an amzing number of 5th time in a row.

In women's competition, anything can happen. Ana Ivanovic, the winner of last year, is ranked 7th now after catching a brief spell when she was the number one in the world. She will definitely be looking to get back on form. You can keep up with the event in Roland Garros 2009 at Roland Garros News 2009 .

Nespresso pioneered the world of coffee capsules. It provides with a unique system that guarantees quality. The system consists of a Nespresso machine and the capsule.

A capsule of Nespresso has just the right amount of ground coffee, and it is hermetically sealed in a manner that makes it not lose its flavor and freshness until the preparation of coffee. The coffee is easy to prepare. Just enter the capsule in the espresso machine and press the activation button. The capsule will be ejected automatically.

The capsules can be purchased only at the Nespresso headquarters in Barcelona. Shipments are made by mail. The capsules of coffee may seem a bit expensive, but they make up for it in the great amount of time you will save for coffee preparation. These capsules can only be used with Nespresso machines.

Nespresso capsules contain an average of 5.5 grams of coffee, and offer 12 different blends of coffee. Also, Nespresso offers a wide range of machines that can be bought or rented. They are equipped with an automatic button for easy programming of the desired amount of coffee, thermoblock system and automatic ejection of the capsule. The main disadvantage is that you can only use the type of coffee supplied by Nespreso, so be sure that you like it before you buy it.

Fado is the expression of the Portuguese soul and is more alive than ever. A new and strong generation of artists joined the legendary voices of old. The essential element of fado music is the "saudade," or what in Portuguese is translated as longing. It is a sad music that sings about destiny (fado comes from the Latin fas, Fatum and is synonymous with "destiny"), death, love betrayed, despair and melancholy.

The origin of this music goes back to the early 19th century among the lower classes and slums. Fado was the heartbreaking music of the taverns, brothels and dark corners of the quarters of Alfama and Mouraria, the oldest and poorest parts of Lisbon . Later on, these songs that emerged from the suburbs became quite fashionable among the aristocratic class. Like many other types of popular musics, such as Argentinian tango, American blues or Spanish flamenco, fado should not be defined.

Both men and women can sing Fado, although the general public almost always prefer a female voice for this genre. A good fado singer exaggerates the facial expressions and gestures with great determination in his/her actions. The hands move from side to side swinging with elegance, while the body remains static.

This genre reached its golden age in the first half of the 20th century, when the Salazar dictatorship in Portugal forced the fado singers to become professionals. Today, fado is protected by official institutions, and it is promoted as a tourist spectacle.

Amalia Rodrigues is the queen of fado, known both home and in the rest of the world as the most famous representative of Portuguese culture. Other great names of the genre were Carlos Ramos, Alfredo Marceneiro, Berta Cardoso, Maria Teresa de Noronha, Hermínia Silva, Fernando Farinha, Fernando Maurício, Lucilia do Carmo and Manuel de Almeida.
